I am searching for a method to shell a sculptured blow mold design with no design and wall thickness limitation.
The standard "Shell" command is highly design sensitive, and playing with tolerance is not always successful.
Most of the shells succeed with small WTH's, as from 1 mm it becomes hard the shell.
As the quality of inside modeled surfaces of a blow molded model is not so important, it is only used to calculate the capacity of the bottle and the plastic volume for the preform design (this is more important).
I'm testing in NX12 with the "Reverse Engineering" functions: “Facet Body from Body” and “Offset”
Ex.: Sphere dia 100mm and wth 2mm (to evaluate the influence of the facet size on the Solid Volume)
- Directly with “Offset” – subtract “Offset Body” from Sphere (no control on facet size, pretty rough)

- First create a “Facet Body from Body” (at this moment you can control the faced size, by changing the Maximum Deviation) than offset body from the faced body

Advantage:
- You can control faced size
- All bottle designs are sellable
- WTH is parametric
- Measure body is still possible (Solid volume is very close to the theoretical one)
Disadvantage:
- Model is no longer 100% sold body
- The only possible export format is stl
Conclusion:
- From now on every bottle design is sellable.
- “Shell by facet” could be a nice one step feature typically for blow molding.
If you have experience, please let me know.
Best regards.
