PMI Dimension in Detail View on the Drawing

$

Hi

I'm working on a Drawing of a Part Family Master that uses PMI Dimensions.

When making a Detail View I can't place the dimension outside the boundaries. It is only possible when making dimension directly in the drawing (the old-fashioned way)

Have anybody experience with this?

How to make tolerance to be added automatically from model into the Hole Table?

Hello,

I created three similar Simple Screw Holes which differ only in "Fit" Parameter:

I want these three "Fit" values to be present in the Hole Table next to the diameter here:

How to make NX to place these values in the Hole Table automatically?

Shell Unlimited suitable for all bottle designs and possible wall thicknesses.

I am searching for a method to shell a sculptured blow mold design with no design and wall thickness limitation.

The standard "Shell" command is highly design sensitive, and playing with tolerance is not always successful.

Most of the shells succeed with small WTH's, as from 1 mm it becomes hard the shell.

As the quality of inside modeled surfaces of a blow molded model is not so important, it is only used to calculate the capacity of the bottle and the plastic volume for the preform design (this is more important).

I'm testing in NX12 with the "Reverse Engineering" functions: “Facet Body from Body” and “Offset”

Ex.: Sphere dia 100mm and wth 2mm (to evaluate the influence of the facet size on the Solid Volume)

-          Directly with “Offset” – subtract “Offset Body” from Sphere (no control on facet size, pretty rough)

1.png

2.png

-          First create a “Facet Body from Body” (at this moment you can control the faced size, by changing the Maximum Deviation) than offset body from the faced body

3.png

4.png

Advantage:

-          You can control faced size

-          All bottle designs are sellable

-          WTH is parametric

-          Measure body is still possible (Solid volume is very close to the theoretical one)

Disadvantage:

-          Model is no longer 100% sold body

-          The only possible export format is stl

Conclusion:

-          From now on every bottle design is sellable.

-          “Shell by facet” could be a nice one step feature typically for blow molding.

If you have experience, please let me know.

Best regards.

NX Thread Feature and External Threads

$

Hi All,

For those of you who model external threads I have questions regarding modeling practice.

In current NX, if I add a thread feature to an external cylinder the thread command expects a cylinder diameter equal to a "Shaft Dia" value found in the thread.dat file.

(By "thread.dat file" I refer to thd_metric.dat or thd_english.dat (aka "imperial") respectively).

A "Shaft Dia" value delivered with NX is the minimum of a max/min range of values for the major diameter of a thread - ie, minimum major diameter. The range of values is familiar in a Machinery's Handbook or a thread standard. A "Shaft Dia" value delivered with NX may not meet your particular need based on your manufacturing practice.

When you model a cylinder for an external thread, do you model the cylinder diameter equal to a diameter specific to your manufacturing practice? And to add a thread feature to that cylinder do you customize the "Shaft Dia" values in the thread.dat file to match your practice?

Or, do you model a cylinder of nominal thread size? For example, a 10mm cylinder for a M10 thread. And customize the "Shaft Dia" values in the thread.dat to nominal size?

Or other?

Thanks,

Eric

Extract curve points to Excel

Hello,

I'm looking for a solution to be able to analyse defect on a 3D model (not perfect).

Let's assume we design in UG a part (at this stage the geometry is perfect). Then we manufacture it (adding defects). The resulting part is scanned (in a 3D scan for example) and a step file is provided (and stored in TC).

The idea would be to slice the part every X mm and get the outer geometry exported in an external file (excel, csv, xml). This result will be send to an external script for analysis (to get geometrical defects).

Maybe it's a bit simpler on an image. We can imagine that the yellow part below is the perfect geometry, the green one is the measure geometry (they won't be both in an assembly like that). What I need is to be able to get let say 200 points all around the curve created by the intersection of the real geometry with the datum (this will be repeated every X mm).

Is there any simple solution to do that (and maybe a way to automate it afterward) ?

Many thanks by advance,

Nicolas

Hi

In the other programes I have worked in, it is possible to do the following:

• Make revolve with internal sketch

• Make Center Line

• Make geometry

• Dimensioning the Diameter in the drawing like this

Can I do this in NX?

Surface modelling - X-form

Hello,

Just wondering how all of a sudden X-form needs a special license to be able to use it? Is there any "standard" license options left to smooth surfaces that don't require a different license?

Thank you.

Promote body on lighweight component

Hi,

to better perform load assembly, we have set the load options to open components in lightweight.

The problem is that promote body of lightweight components, if I create sketch, entities like edges and relative points are not selectable. The solution is to convert the components into 'Exact' representation.

This was dicovered by me, this is explained in the help this behaviour or exist a setting to automatic make entities selectionables ?

Auto Update / Insert Expression in Tabular_Note which is inserted from table_files

Hi All,

I am trying to get a Tabular_Note Template that I can insert into all Drawings.

In this template I already inserted 2 userdefined expressions with value = 0. These expressions should take over the value that is already existing in all my drawings. (The best case would be if this is working with Master Model but also in Single File I had no success)

Here a screenshot of the table template prt:

image.png

image.png

Everytime I insert the table template to a drawing the expressions from the template will be added with '1 '2 '3 etc to the existing.

image.png

But it should not create further expressions it should just take the existing value into the tabular_Note and replace the 0.

Perhaps you can give me a hint to the process or perhaps I need a syntax.

Thank you all.

NX 1847 Icon Color / Schematics

Hello to all,

So, I downloaded the New Release of NX, and started to use, but the Icons for the commands seems to appear all in the same color scheme, and honestly, its very hard to locate the proper icon for the command I want to use…

These Ribbon Bars settings I’m using were made for NX11 and 12, and are working OK, but with NX 1847, its giving me some problems finding the proper command icon… Because of the colors and the location changed compared to my NX11 / 12 Version….

Is there any option to change this?

Is this the real and Final Concept for the Icons?

Can this be something related to my workstation configurations?

Hope someone can help me out…

Here are some pictures so that you guys can view them and tell me your opinions...

Drafting: Hidden edges not showing

Hi,

I cannot seem to make NX show the hidden edges of a threaded hole. I have to do a section view.

I have right clicked the view on the top > settings  > hidden lines > process hidden lines. No matter what I choose... the hidden edges will not show up.

My target is to show the hidden lines the same way the section view does.

Thank you.

gap between two surfaces used to trim each other

I have edited my main post to simplify my question:

I have two bodies that intersect.  I use one body to trim the other.  I am left with gaps between them.

I modify one body to be fully inside the other by 0.1 and I am still left with tiny 0.000x gaps between them after using one to trim the other.

This isn't a complicated shape, pretty much made with straight lines and smooth radiai

HI all,

While trying to edit the part in NX11, I'm getting an warning "This feature may be different after update. It was created in a future version."

Any one knows how to fix it?

Thanks in advance.

A simple one:

I would like to increase the hight of the assembly navigator. How can I move the comands tabs so it is places not above the assembly navigator but at the right. I have seen a video where a user have the the tabs in the bottom instead of in the upper part of the screen, the point is that the tabs were placed at the right in that video.

How to change annotation color on existing drawing

$

Hi,

I have read multiple forum threads about customer defaults and drafting preferences and I still struggle with it.

I have a draft that was created and dimensions were already put down. Since everything is just black and white and gets too confusing I would like to change the dimension colors to teal - just like in Solid Edge.

I open MENU > Preferences > Drafting...
Navigate to Common > Line/Arrow > Arrowhead and change its color to ID 142 "Strong Teal"
Press Apply and press OK and exactly nothing happens.

How do I change the annotation colors on an existing Drawing/Draft.

Thank you.

Radial dimension positioning

$

Hello

Nx Version : 11.0

Sorry, I could not able to upload the Nx 3D model file.

I am facing problem with measuring the radial clearance dimension between 2 circular parts (in a single component have concentric cylindrical faces).

If the radial clearance between the 2 concentric cylindrical faces in a component or between the 2 concentric cylindrical faces in two different parts in a assembly while measuring the individual radius measurement and after subtract I am getting 5.00 mm. But If I am directing measuring by using the `Distance’ measurement between the 2 radial faces I am getting the nearest value to 5.00 mm i.e, 5.1786 mm. The concentricity between the 2 faces checked and found accurate i.e., C/C to both faces is 0.00000 mm

Everytime I cannot measure the 2 radial dimensions and I cannot subtract. So I tried to make some standard methodology and i have checked with Projected distance with following trials.

  • Projected distance with X / Y / Z applicable axis as Vector,
  • Projected distance both the cylindrical faces as Vector (Selected individually),
  • Projected distance with all / various distance options like `Minimum’ and `Maximum’.
  • Projected distance with all possible `Alternate Solutions’
  • Again cross checked for center offset i.e., ensured the concentricity of the faces.

But I could not able to get the correct dimension directly. Anyone can help me to get out from this hurdle.

Thanks in advance.

Best way to export model to DXF for laser cutter

$

Hi,

Lets say I have modeled a simple plate with counterbore holes and some chamfers.

And I need to cut out the shape with a lasercutter.

Obviously the laser cutter cannot create the counterbore holes and the chamfers, so I must export a file without these features. Just the outline and the holes that go trough the part - the chamfers and other features will be machined later.

Now what is the most elegant way to do this?

- Create a section view that cuts through the part at 3mm height and effectively eliminates all the counterbore and chamfer features and export that?
- Export DXF out of NX with all the chamfer lines and bring it back into NX and delete the extra elements?

- ... OPTION nr 3 ... ?
