Problem making a drawing with "Reference Existing Part"

Hello,

I am trying to make a drawing from the attached part in NX 12. If I open the part and press File -> New -> Drawing and select "Stand-alone Part" it works perfectly. But If I select "Reference Existing Part" insted, no views appear on the drawing (see attached file). If I select Application -> Drafting it also works without problems.

I have tried a lot of settings, but can't figure out why it doesn't work. If I use any other partfile than the one attached, "Reference Existing Part" works without problems, so it seem to be a part-specific problem. Any ideas as to why this is the case?

How can I import the customization from one to other? I mean, modified customer defaults, dialogs, palettes, reuse libraries...

Thanks in advance

refine a spline

I have a planar spline (brown) created in the early stage in my model. It has 3 segments. Now I want to refine it to one segment while keeping its original shape roughly.

I did the job like this:
  1. create a new sketch
  2. project the original spline to the sketch (non-associative)
  3. edit the projection spline (blue/green) to 1 segment directly (here the original shape is lost)
  4. drag the poles of the projection spline (blue/green) to approach the original spline (brown).
Sometimes the last step is very painful when the original curve is complex (e.g. with 9 poles).

Hope to have your suggestions on a better workflow. Thanks!

Dealing with the "Part Material Selection" window

The following window has caused confusion, and bad parts in my past experience, due to users not understanding what it was asking them.  At a former employer, a user got this prompt, and picked the wrong material, which then populated the drawing incorect, and the parts were made with the wrong material.

Since we have just gotten the material to populate our title blocks, based on the assigned model material, I'm looking for a clear way to explain this prompt to our users, to avoid having parts made incorrect.  When opening an assembly, is the most 'dangerous' time, since you may get this promp multiple times, and not know exactly which componnet it is refering to.

My personal rule of thumb, is to click "cancel", if I am not 100% sure what material a part should be, and then

PartMaterialSelection.JPG

For those not familiar with this prompt, you will get it, if a model has more than one material assigned to it.  Either by a user not removing a material when a material changes, or via a wave link, which has a material.

Any way to lock pop up windows position?

Is there any way to lock the pop up windows position away from the cursor?

Seems to get in the way more often then it helps Smiley Sad

Thanks!

Modeling Text Into Assembly

$

Hello,

Relatively new NX user, so I appologize in advance if I do not know the names of some functions.

I am attempting to put a legal notice stamp on all of our part files that can be exported to a Step203 file, and then continue to appear after importing. We do not want to have this "engraved in the parts", we simply want to be able to have a legal notice follow a STEP203 part through export / import. Is there any way to add text notice, in the model / an assembly (not on the part) without having a massive effect on file size (i.e. embossing text and adding as assembly).

duoyvshuju.jpg

This is a successor to the previsou thread surfacing issues. Hope to have more of your comments to get better understanding of G2 surfacing.

I refined the input splines and rebuit the input faces in the original prt example. Now the issue should be clear and straightforward.

Thanks!

I want to project a circle to a surface created from two conics. The projection need to be in the direction of the purple line as shown in the attached part file.

I can't find a feature to do the job. Hope to have your suggestion. Thanks!

can someone help me how to make a cut using an arc in drafting? Please see the drawing in the attachment. I have NX11, Win 7. Many thanks

constrain import components using coordinate system constraints.

Hello:

Can someone take a look at the 3 image attachment and tell me how I can constrain via coors sys.

As you can see both part A and B have coord sys but when I go to assemble them I have no way to

pick on them to constrain.

Utilizing NX macros to set drafting preferences?

$

I am having an issue setting up a macro in NX to set my drafting preferences every time I open the CAD program, and I can't seem to find any documentation on the syntax used in NX macro code to help troubleshoot. I'd like to code the macro so that no matter what tab you were on before, it always goes to the "General/Setup -> Workflow" tab and then starts setting up preferences. I have found that NX macros record the following:

1. Code that opens drafting preferences
2. Code that loads the current tab (the one that I am on when recording the macro)
3. Code that loads the "General/Setup -> Workflow" tab
4. Code that sets preferences
5. Code that closes drafting preferences

The portion of the code that actually sets the drafting preferences is working correctly (steps 1, 4, 5), however it is on the condition that the "General/Setup -> Workflow" tab is the one that appears when you open up the "Drafting Preference" page. If it is not the page that opens up, the macro throws an error. In other words, the tab that opens up first must match the current tab used in step 2 to record the macro. Unfortunately, it seems that while drafting preferences are stored in the part files, the tab that you were last on is always remembered. So to run the macro, I'd have to go into drafting preferences first and choose the "General/Setup -> Workflow" tab, and then run the macro.

Is there a way to remove the need to load the current tab (step 2), or to automatically go to the first tab? I've tried a few different things and am basically copy-pasting various code around, however I can't seem to find a way to circumvent the need to load the current tab. Also, is there documentation on macro syntax, more specifically what "ASK_ITEM, BEG_ITEM, and END_ITEM" mean?

Multiple materials for part, composite materials - mass, density

$

Anybody have worked with composite materials? Or used multiple materials for part?

For example we have one part/detail that must consist of 2 or 3 different materials. How can be assigned few materials for this part and then geted mass for this part?

Is Integrated Materials Management module resolve this task?

The task is interesting and not typical.

In common case we have one part and one assigned material (with density data) and this is enougth to get mass for this detail, i.e -  one part->one material, but what about one part  and multiple materials?

Center points of datum coordinate systems appear in drafting

When I add a view in drafting and then hide the datums, the center point of the datum coordinate systems stills appears in the view. I have to enter the 3D hide the datum coordinate sytem then it disappears from view in drafting and it keeps hide if I show it again in 3D. This behaviour is new for me since I updated to NX12. How can I avoid that?

Hi all,

for reference check the picture first. Why is this happening? How to make it look fine?

This happens only to parts created by me.

Only within assembly.

Imported components display fine.

If single part displayed it is fine too.

Thanks.
