Convergent Modelling Technology is a brand new and exciting modelling paradigm delivered with NX 11 that enables designers to interact directly with Facet geometry providing significant productivity gains. Convergent Modelling Technology also is a key supporter of new manufacturing techniques such as 3D Printing and Additive Machining. Please see here the first example of Convergent Modelling Technology.

NX export to STEP or any other format: custom material attributes

$

Hello everyone,
since I come from the VIz. industry and I am new to the whole NX pipeline, I apologize in advance for any wrong naming of NX functions.

My goal is to establish a working pipeline for material definition export from NX to any type of an export format (STEP, IGES etc.). The exported files are then passed to the visualization department, which is working with Autodesk 3dsMax and a rendering engine of their choice. Material definition is a huge problem in our current NX > STEP > Autodesk pipeline, since no named materials are being exported into the STEP format.

As stated at https://www.cax-if.org/ there is a way to store materials inside of a STEP file. For example, the following file contains a material defininion for "AMS 4928; Titanium 6-4":

https://www.cax-if.org/library/dm1-id-214.zip

My questions are:
1) How do I assign / export material definition from NX to STEP to achieve a result like in the ZIP file above?
2)The Material assignment for Viz may vary, e.g. "Steel" can have anisotropic or isotropic reflective parameters.
One can assign custom attributes, where a descriptive material name could be given to a part. This would be enough to parse the exported STEP file in Viz. for material assignment.
Is there a generic way to export custom attributes (assigned through part properties in NX) to STEP, or any other export format?
3) In general: is there a way to export "DB_PART_NAME", "DB_PART_DESC" etc. to STEP,or any other export format?

I would prefer to go with (2) aund (3), since a single material name / property would not suffice the visualization requirements in many cases. Writing a parser for object names containing the "DB_PART_NAME" and some custom material name on the other hand would yield the proper object handling and shouldn't be a great deal.

We have  NX 8.5 at aour disposal, upgrading now to V.10 (will still take some time though).

Thanks a lot for your help!

PMI in Assembly Model

I am not a NX guy, but just trying to prepare some PMI for a Active Workspace demo. My mode of PMI creation is NX 10. I successfully created PMI, but it seems to be associated with components and not the Assembly itself. (Trying to use Active Workspace to display PMI, and none is displayed in Assembly view) When I look at Lifecycle viewer I see a check mark for PMI on components. How do I modify or create PMI so that it is associated with Assembly, not components? Lindy

"Result file is in wrong format"

Here I am again in need of your help.

When I try to open my solution results, it gives me the error "Result file is in wrong format". I think there is something wrong with one of the parts (Part27.1) because it only let's me use Meshes with a size element bigger than ~5mm. For lower sized element meshes, it freezes at 69% and after a while it doesn't create the mesh. However, I could create a 5mm element size mesh and now the error comes while solving.

I don't know what else to do, I've recreated that part a ton of times, exported it to different file types in different programs. I thought that this time I had it because I solved that part only for eigenvalues and it worked, but I needed to insert it in an assembly and will need to insert it in a even bigger assembly later on.

I attached the .zip file with all the .prt, .fem, .sim files and a .txt file with the Solution Monitor text, saying that some components were illegally defined.

Thanks for everything so far,

Luís Ferreira

How can I wrap an image onto a face or set of faces?

I want to wrap an image onto a face in NX.

For planer geometry, it is pretty easy using Render/decal  (see below)

Burhop_1504 Jun. 20 17.03.jpg

However, this does a projection and I really want to wrap it (like a real decal).  Projection onto non-planer faces gives me stuff like this :-(

Does anyone have any solutions for this?  UV mapping like in other software might work but I don't think NX supports it.

Printing on larger paper size in NX10

Hello everyone!

We have a strange issue. So far we could not understand how to print drawing from NX10 in 100% size. It scales up without asking if the paper is bigger. Quite mind-boggling and does not seem to depend on a particular printer settings. Any ideas?

Sheet Out-Of Date

I'm having quite the odd error right now. My drafting sheet keeps stating that it's out-of date, even though all of my views are up to date within the Part Navigator. What would be causing this miscommunication?

I have a request for some screen images, but without the light high lites on the surface?  I've tried turning off 2 sided lights didn't help.

SM Bridge Bend

I have two Tabs (base) that I want to connect, and was trying the Bridge Bend, but no luck.  Note, the far bottom edge remians on the same plane.  Is that the reason?

Other suggestions for this transition?  I've tried stacking flange, on flange, on flange, but the far edge wants to rise off that plane, or something else goes wacky.  I've tried lofted flange, but we would like this to be simple brakes.

Non-Uniform Scale - "ease-in" or "ease-out"

Does anyone know of a way to apply something like an "ease-in" or "ease-out" function to a scale in a single direction. I've already tired X-forming certain poles of a surface into the desired height, but continue to have a uniform result when using global shape by surface.

Default Selection Scope

Hi,

I'm fairly new to NX and I'm currently designing a machine in assembly mode. I was wondering if there was a way I could default the selection scope to "entire assembly" because between parts it likes to switch back to "within work part only". It's kind of annoying to have to constantly switch back to "entire assembly" everytime.

Thanks

Here is another small example of how the powerful and flexible Convergent Modelling in NX 11, (the only software to offer this ability to work with Facet, Surface and Solid geometry in one environment) and 3D printing enables complex shapes to be designed and manufactured.

Whats new in NX11?

I see preview videos coming out, and I believe there was some demos at PLM World, but for those of us that could not go, is there any document available on what's coming?  We are looking at training plans, and we'd rather not send someone to training, if there are big changes in that area coming.

Even a sales like 'whats new', vs. the actual whats new that comes with the release.

Thanks,

 Dave

Automatically Find External Dimensions

Hi,

First off, this is my first post, thanks for the wealth of knowledge on here, it's been of great help to me. (I'm a relatively new convert to NX) I've got a rather tricky problem and would love some feedback.

I've got a large BOM, with thousands of parts. The list of parts is stored in excel, each part number links to Teamcenter.

Now I'm trying spec out our automated warehouse bin sizes, and in order to do that I want to see the distribution of part sizes.

Is there a way to automatically pull the x, y and z outer dimensions of NX files? Even better would be the minimum perpendicular dimensions in case they're smaller than the x y and z ones. Ideally I'd like a script that can do this, as it would take hundreds of man hours to go through every single drawing.

Does anyone know if  light weight section planes are editable?

Would like ot be able to revise sections rather than re-cut them if there is a math change.

any info would be great
