Motion Simulation

Hello,

i'm trying to do a motion simulation of a three wheels system (that's what i've been told it's called, pictures below), both cylinders will turn at the same speed and as a consequence the sphere will also turn and translate on the floor, the objective of this simulation is to calculate the enrgy required to operate the system, but i don't know which type of joint i need to choose between the sphere and each cylinder and the floor.

i will also attach the files below.

PS: the angle alpha is equal to 45°

Thanks in advance.

Remove element from feature select curve dialog

On thing I always bang my head against is the inaccessibilty of the list of selected elements in all selections dialogs. Solidworks allows to select elements from this list and delete them.

Right now, i have a very basic extrude and added a curve to the sketch it is extruding, now i want to not use the new curve for the extrude that is using the entire sketch - how can I edit the Section: Select Curve list ? (Reset, delete single elements, or even just see the 24 elements in it).

Sketch Element Tree

Why is there no navigator/tree view for the elements of a sketch?

My request is basically to having the list of sketch elements as a logical succession of the hierarchy

Assembly Navigator

Part Navigator

Sketch Navigator.

Incomplete list of potential uses:

  • Simpler selection of elements in busy sketches,
  • Deleting elements in busy sketches,
  • Editing 2D elements w selection from tree,
  • Show/hide elements in sketches,
  • Converting groups of curves to references (!)

Feel free to comment with more uses or if you simply miss this too.

Symbols in modeling curve text

In application modeling, Curve tab, Text command, is it possible to use symbols?  Back in the days of yore, we could type in $W or <#d> and get a depth symbol, for example, but now I just get what I type, literally.  I suspect this went away wehn NX started using the windows fonts?

Reason I ask, I was placing some text that would be extruded into a 3D printed part, and wanted to indicate a direction.  Workaround was to use ->, rather than sketch an arrowhead.

I do see userdefined symbols for PMI notes, but nothing for text.  I also see "Show unicode control characters", and "Open IME", but nothing in the help as to what they do?

Linked and Extracted Faces

Hello all,

I've been looking to understand NX a bit more. I am using NX 12 and I started to look for similar functions created by a customer, and I wanted to see if I was using these functions correctly.

I just want to make sure I'm using the features correctly. This doesn't have any practical form of use right now, but it seems to be allowed to create this type of features or geometry in a sub-assembly level in NX.

ugtopv STANDALONE - OutputDirectory and MONOLITHIC seem not to work.

Hi dear Experts,

I have discovered this issue, but I am very surprised that these 2 Options never worked, starting from NX5.

(as far as I could test, at least).

Maybe they worked fine on UG16,  but I do not have it anymore.

Nore : Input Assembly toycar_assy.prt is located in your NX install directory :

            <your_NX_dir>\UGOPEN\SampleNXOpenApplications\.NET\AssemblyViewer

 test05.jpg

COMMANDLINES :

PATH=E:\MultiNX\NX5\NX506\NX506_10;E:\MultiNX\NX5\NX506\NX506_10\UGII;%PATH%

E:\MultiNX\NX5\NX506\NX506_10\PVTRANS\ugtopv.exe .\toycar_assy.prt -config=.\tessUG_05.config -generate_assy_jt

ISSUE :

On NX09, 10, 11 and 12 the result of STANDALONE (PRTs on disk) ugtopv is always a mimic bunch of single JT files in the current directory where I launch the bat file !!! Not correct.

Reproduced also on NX 8.5 , 7.5.5 and 5.

ISSUES Details :

  • OutputDirectory is not honored
  • MONOLITHIC is not honored

Here the main interesting Options which I used in the tessUG.config :

            OutputDirectory = "C:\JT-Files_05_batch\"

            CommonPartsPath = ""

            chordalOption = "RELATIVE"

            structureOption = "MONOLITHIC"

Thanks in advance if you have got any explanation or experience.

Views on Synchronous Modeling

I've been using NX since before "Direct Editing", and now "Synchronous Modeling", so I view those tools as something to be used on an imported "dumb" body, since that is what they were designed for.

Now, the OOTB Home tab in the modeling application has the Synchronous tools right there, so new users don't see them as something for use on an imported dumb body, but simply tools to be used.  I find more and more models from our new users, that have synchronous features thru out the feature tree.  Personal opinion, they seem less stable, when ohter changes are made, and much like 'bandaids', in the modeling method.

So I guess my question is two fold, what is Siemens PLM's opinion on the use of Synchronous Modeling tools?  is there a "best practice" for when to use them?  and how do other users feel about their use?

...or am I just stuck in my old ways, and out of date, in avoiding there use, for anything other than imported data?

Talking with another long time NX user, he feels Synchronous features should only be at the begining of the tree, when starting with a dumb body, or at the very end, for a quick clean up, of a traditional scratch built model.

How to change the import step 214 settings file location?

I would like to change the default location of the step214ug.def file to my own folder. In customer defaults there is the option Gateway>Translators>STEP>STEP 214 import>Settings file>Windows. However when setting this option, and restarting NX, the settings file listed on the Import STEP214 dialog is still the same default. There is also no option to define this in the ugii_env.dat file. Does anyone know how to change this? Thanks.

How to get geometric info on a body?

$

Hello, I'm testing various methods to achieve the cleanest possible import of a STEP file. Some of that involves creating Heal Geometry parts of various tiny tolerance values. Now, having created these parts I would like to inspect them to determine what the differences are between them (apart from file size).

Is there a way within NX (or journal) to inquire detailed geometric data of a sheet body/solid body? For instance, number of faces, bspline surfaces, conical surfaces, cylindrical surfaces, planes, spherical surfaces, toroidal surfaces etc. Having this information will help determine the quality of the resulting bodies and the sucess of each import method. Thank you.

Shape Studio VS Realize Shape etc.

Hello.

Can you explain me the difference between SHAPE STUDIO and REALIZE SHAPE?

For which applications is the one or the other used and why?

How limited is the "surface"-application (ribbon in NX) compared to them?

What would you use  to "reverese-engineer" topology optimization results?

Are there other comparable surface-applications witihin NX? If yes, what are they used for?

Can you link to some brochures etc.?

Cheers.

How to Build Structural Weldment Profie from Points Profile

Hi,

I am trying to create a car structural frame made from beams by making the frame with points and then having different part files as as sketch of each cross section. Is there any command to do this directly or should I make the frame a different way? We have all the coordinates of the frame. I basically want to get what is seen in the picture (green frame made from welded beams) but not sure if I am taking the right approach. I was reading "Solid_Edge_Structural_Frames_and_Weldments.pdf" but my frame file doesn't let me select any lines as the frame segment. 11.PNGWhat we need12.PNGBuilt Frame From Coordinates13.PNGI have 31 files for each unique member with different cross sectional dimensions. This is one of them. (just sketch, no extrusion)

Any help is greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

unequal segments after pattern along an ellipse

Hi,

I have a problem with pattern along a curve. I have a point on an ellipse and I do a pattern geometry with constant pitch of 20 mm arc length along this ellipse:

1.jpg

Then I use a divide curve command and divide it with my patterned points:

2.jpg

I don't understand why the segments of my ellipse have not the same exact length of 20mm?!?

3.jpg

When the path is a line or circle it works OK. But it gives me unequal length segments with conics, ellipse and even spline.

Also I checked the other methods rigid and offset. The problem still exists.

Anybody has any Idea?

Thanks.

Change expression type?

While creating some expressions (prior to using them in any geometry) I mistakenly gave one a "number" type rather than "integer", which I wanted. However, even though the expression is not being used anywhere, there's no dropdown menu for changing its type.  Is there some other way to do this? I could delete it and retype it, but then that changes the (as created) order, which for various reasons I'd rather not. Odd that the type is not editable. Thanks for any help with this.

1D meshing cross section won't appear

$

Hi! This is my first time on this forum, so i don't know whether I should post here or in the NX Nastran forum.

Anyway, my problem appears when I want to make a cross section for a 1D mesh.

- I've modelled a line with the specified length of the object, and started the Pre/Post, New FEM and simulation. I have also tried creating a new Nastran simulation, with no different result.

- In Geometry Options, I've tride checking of both Sketch Curves and Lines. I don't know if there's any difference betweene these two in my case.

- Leaving everything else as default, I added the 1D mesh and created a new cross sction under Physical Properties -> Edit -> Fore Section -> Show Section Manager -> New Section. I have also tried creating the Cross section first, and then applying it to the object, but no difference.

This is when I should be able to see my object with the assigned cross section along my line, but it won't appear.

When I click "Preview" in the "Beam Section Manager" or "Beam Section" windows, some of the parameters of the cross section appear in my workwindow for a short time before they disappear right after, so it might seem like NX tries to create the model, but fails. My "Cross Section Previe" window still apperas.

I've heard about someone else having the same problem, but their solutin was to move the work folder out of the program folder, which i already have.

So do you have any suggestion of what the cause of the problem might be, and mybe a solution?

Tanks!

Hello everyone,

Using NX 11.0.2.7 MP7. I would like to place in Drafting the GD&T Intersection plane indicator, but I am not able to find it (see attachment). Am I missing something or is it avaliable as an update or in NX12?

Any support is much appreciated.

Sheet metal - generated bend lines

$

Hi,

I worked with sheet metal for the first time within NX 11. And I used the automatically generated bend lines in my drawing. Now my colleague noticed the difference between the bend line, and the actual dimension we needed after it was bent. Obviously the difference comes from the thickness of the plate and the radius.

My question is: the automatically generated bend lines.. what exactly do they indicate? Say we were to bend a radius on the inside of R10. Does the bend line indicate the centre of the radius?

It seems pretty self-explanatory, but rather be sure than sorry, I guess.

Drawing booklet - customized drawing template

Hello,

I would like to insert customized drawing sheets into the drawing booklet. I had placed my own customized templates into the

C:\Program Files\Siemens\NX 11.0\DRAFTING\automation\templates

folder but I could not choose these templates when I started the drawing booklet wizard.

Is there any palette file I have to update? Or what is the correct method?

Thanks for your help,

Zsolt

Crosshatch scaling to the geometry of part

Greetings,

Is it possible to automaticly scale crosshatch distance in assembly drawing based on the size/geometry of the sectioned objects. In the picture I have manually adjusted the crosshatch distance, but can this be done automatically in NX 10? We'll move to NX 12 in the next year.
